The Littleborough sanctuary was called out by a walker on Blackstone Edge. He could see a bird in a drain. The bird was there when he went out on his walk and still there when he came back. He tried to get near it to see if it would fly away, but the bird just struggled in the drainThe staff went to help the gentleman retrieve the bird. They took a feed sack from the sanctuary, putting a hole in the end of it to put the birds head through. This way the bird couldn't flap and injure its wings. It did not appreciate being restrained and gave the gentleman and the member of staff a very nasty bite. The bird was very large and eventually had to have its head put in a coat to stop it biting again while its rescuers struggled back up the moorland. The bird was brought to the sanctuary with no obvious injuries except it was underweight. It was recognised as being a Gannet so fish was urgently needed. We rushed round to the trout farm and are very grateful to them for supplying the much needed fish. Even though the Gannet was hungry it would not eat so he had to be force fed. This is something we don't like doing but sometimes wildlife does not understand you are only trying to help. The Gannet soon picked up weight and was ready to go, so we took him down to the reservoir in front of the farm, where we kept an eye on him. He spent a little time fishing, cleaning his feathers and the next day he flew off. | |
